The XB-70 Valkyrie The XB-70 Valkyrie was a nuclear-armed bomber designed for the USAF's SAC in the 1950s. A 6-engined aircraft able to fly at Mach 3 at high altitudes (74,000 ft), which would have allowed it to avoid defending interceptors, the only effective anti-bomber weapon at that time. The cost of the aircraft ($1.5Bn USD), the development of ICBMs and the first effective anti-aircraft missiles led to the cancellation of the program in 1961. Music: David Axelrod - "Holy Thursday". The Nedelin Rocket Disaster The Nedelin disaster was a launch pad accident that occurred at Baikonur Cosmodrome during the development of the Soviet R-16 ICBM in 1960. The prototype missile exploded on the launch pad, killing over 100 military personnel, including the Strategic Rocket Forces Marshal Mitrofan Nedelin in the world's worst rocketry disaster. The B-58 Hustler The Convair B-58 Hustler was the first operational jet bomber capable of Mach 2 supersonic flight. Developed for the USAF for service with SAC during the late 1950s. Intended to fly at high altitudes and speeds to avoid Soviet fighters, the introduction of the surface-to-air missile forced the B-58 into a low-level penetration role that severely limited its strategic value. The B-58 featured many rechnical inovations inclusing; sophisticated inertial guidance navigation and bombing systems, heat-resistant honeycomb sandwich skin panels in the wings and fuselage. Individual clam-sell ejection pods and an external droppable two-component pod beneath the fuselage containing extra fuel and a nuclear weapon. Music: Télépopmusik - 'Breathe'. Vietnam - The Air War During the Vietnam war, the Vietcong fought a guerrilla war, while the US forces fought a more conventional war, often relying on air superiority and overwhelming firepower. The US deluged the north with a million tons of ordnance in an attempt to "bomb them back into the Stone Age". The bombing escalated from the North, to the Ho Chi Min trail but was ultimately un-successful. Music: The Small Faces - Tin Soldier Tags: vietnam war bomb |

Blackburn Buccaneer The Blackburn Buccaneer was designed as a long-range carrier-based attack aircraft. It entered RAF service in July 1962, and retired in 1992, during which time it remained one of the fastest low-level aircraft. The Buccanner featured many novel and inovative design features; a variable incidence tail-plane, area ruled fuselage, rotating internal bomb-bay and wing boundary-Layer control. In addition to conventional ordnance, in 1965 the Buccaneer was type-approved for nuclear weapons delivery i.e. the Red Beard and WE177 bombs. All nuclear weapons were carried internally. B-17 Daylight Bombing Raid The B-17 was primarily employed in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The U.S. 8th Air Force based in England complemented the RAF Bomber Command's nighttime area bombing in Operation Pointblank, to help secure air superiority over Western Europe in preparation for Operation Overlord. Despite their legendary ability to absorb damage, especially in belly-landings and ditchings, aircrews faced a 1 in 3 chance of not returning from their missions. WW1 in Colour - Hell in the Trenches World War I was the first modern global military conflict which took place in Europe between 1914 to 1918. Archaic military tactics met modern industrialised warfare for the first time, resulting casualties on a previously unimaginable scale. Men rotted in the mud, then were sent to face massed machine gun fire, modern artillary, tanks and chemical weapons. Over 20 million soldiers and civilians died and countless others were physically maimed or mentally scarred by the horrors of trench warfare. Project Orion - To Saturn by Nuclear bomb Orion was a 1950's Project to study the posibility of a spacecraft powered by nuclear pulse propulsion. The design would have worked by ejecting nuclear weapons from the rear of a vehicle, detonating them, and catching the blast with a shock absorber equipped pusher plate. This sequence would be repeated thousands of times, in effect an atomic pogo stick. The project was scrapped in 1965 amid fear about fallout both political and radialogical. Footage shown is of scale testing done using conventional explosives. Tags: orion nuclear atomic space |

The P-51 Mustang The P-51 Mustang was a long-range single-seat fighter aircraft that served with the Allied air forces during WW2. It flew mostly as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, ensuring air superiority from early 1944. The definitive version of the fighter was powered by a supercharged 12-cylinder Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. It is in my opinion the most aesthetically pleasing of all the WW2 fighters. The BAC TSR-2 The BAC TSR-2 was to be the RAF's foremost combat aircraft for the 1960's onwards, replacing the Canberra in the Tactical Strike/Reconnaissance role. The aircraft was to have supersonic capability at tree-top height and was the first aircraft in the World to be equipped with a Head-Up-Display (HUD). The TSR project was subsequently murdered in 1964 by a short-sighted Labour government, and all project material and prototypes ordered destroyed. A decision motivated mostly by pressure from the US to not compete with their F-111 Aardvark in the global market. Music: Gary Jules - Mad World. Tags: tsr2 raf coldwar |

The Nuclear Triad In strategic nuclear parlance, the Nuclear Triad refers to the three tiers of a country's nuclear arsenal. Composed of land-based ICBMs, ballistic missile submarines armed with SLBMs, and strategic bombers armed with bombs or cruise missiles. This reduces the possibility that an enemy could destroy all of a country's nuclear forces in a first strike attack. This ensures a credible threat of a second strike, and is the cornerstone of the doctrine of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD). Music: Thom Yorke - 'Black Swan'. Tags: triad nuclear icbm slbm |

Tsar Bomba - The King of Bombs Tsar Bomba, the King of all Bombs. No other man made explosion has come close to the power of 1961 test. Its yield was ten times greater then all of the munitions exploded during WWII. It was not a practical weapon, but a Cold War political stunt to frighten the West. Weighing 27 tons and 8 meters long, the TU-95 that carried had to be specially modified. Parachute retarded, it detonated 4km over the Novaya Zemlya testing grounds. It initially created a 6.5km wide fireball, Light from the detonation was visible 1,000 km away; blast damage 1000km away; the mushroom cloud rose as high as 64 km and developed to a width of 30-40 km Source: www.sonicbomb.com Tags: tsar bomb soviet atomic nuclear biggest |

Will Israel Bomb Iran? There is strong evidence to suggest that Israel is considering a pre-emptive strike against Iran to halt its nuclear ambitions, amid suspicions that it is exploiting its civil nuclear programme as a cover to produce atomic weapons. Iran's current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad quoted Ayatollah Khomeini's call for Israel to be "removed from the pages of history", it's unlikely that Israel will just wait for them to aquire the weapons to achieve this.
