SoundSeen: Prepping (Smelling) Manuscripts with Columba Yesterday, a few producers (Colleen, Mitch, and I) drove about an hour northwest of Minneapolis to the town of Collegeville to scout locations for Krista's interview with Father Columba Stewart. This small Minnesota town is home to the Benedictine monks of St. John's Abbey and University, and the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML, or "himmel" as I've heard it pronounced). If you've heard of their work, it's most probably for the St. John's Bible, a project commissioning the first handwritten, illuminated Bible since the printing press made its appearance in the 15th century. But, these archivists also preserve and digitize an incredibly large number of manuscripts from places all over the globe, including the world's largest collection of Ethiopian manuscripts and continuing projects in Syria, Lebanon, Malta, Ukraine, India, and many countries in Europe. For this morning's interview, Mitch asked Columba to bring a few examples. So, he and Wayne Torborg pulled out a few and gave us a preview. If only you could smell them. Ooh la la! Webby Award Acceptance Speech Our online editor, Trent Gilliss, opted for the laugh and a bit of disclosure in his five-word acceptance speech at the 2008 Webby Awards gala on June 10. And he got to shake the hand of Saturday Night Live's lead writer, Seth Meyers. "Not bad for an atheist" was highlighted as one of the better speeches of the night by USA Today, PC Magazine, and Yahoo News. But, Trent was worried sick after he said it. An Open Letter to Change The documentary "Encounter Point" takes a direct, honest approach to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that lacks the sugar-coated enamel of many peacekeeping portrayals. Through the participants of the Bereaved Families Forum, you experience the difficult dialogue taking place between individual Palestinians and Israelis who lost loved ones, cry, and find hope in the possibility of common people reaching out and changing the situation by sharing their stories -- and their pain -- with each other. In this scene from the film, Robi Damelin is faced with putting into practice the ideals of peace when she discovers her son's killer has been caught. Glass Chapel of Mason's Bend This is one of the signature public structures built under Sam Mockbee's direction in 2000. The chapel was intended to serve as a community center for a bookmobile and traveling medical care, and a gathering space for prayer and fellowship. But now, I'm not so sure. The structure and its companion piece across the clay and gravel road are maintained, but they don't appeared to be lived in. Where the glass wall of overlapping car windshields once used to welcome passersby, now lurks an older mobile home. The rammed earth walls have held up remarkably well. What I didn't expect to see is the lush, tropical plants and flowers that now line the interior passageway and the front. After the long wait to see the Glass Chapel though, it was well worth it. Pictures seem to grow its peak by 30 feet. It's much smaller, and much more intimate than that. Human scale factored in and provides a sense of awe and serenity. Take a walk through it. Bach's Bible Johann Sebastian Bach's compositions, Dr. Thomas Rossin says, stemmed from his private faith — a faith evidenced by Bach's handwritten notes in his Bible. Making Environmental Issues Relevant Environmentalism and climate change are hot topics; yet they're still often imagined as the territory of scientists, expert activists, and those who can afford to be environmentally conscious. Biologist and Evangelical Christian is transforming the ecology of his immediate world in Dunn, Wisconsin. The Speaking of Faith production staff made a road trip to Cal DeWitt's home to give you a more visual perspective of the marshes and wildlife that surround his lands. We asked DeWitt how he approached his neighbors when moving forward with his ideas of preserving the natural beauty of Dunn. He told a series of stories that speak to Majora Carter's point about making environmental issues relevant to people's daily lives. Tour of Rural Studio's 32K (aka 20K) Duplex House Auburn University's Rural Studio in western Alabama draws architectural students into the design and construction of homes and public spaces in some of the poorest counties in the United States. They're creating beautiful and economical structures that are unique in the world — and that nurture sustainability of the natural world as of human dignity. The Rural Studio has completed their third generation of the 20K House — budgeting $10,000 in materials and the rest for future profit for a contractor. In a clever twist for a pair of brothers, they've combined the two in the form of a dogtrot. Take a look. Tags: ruralstudio alabama auburn architecture greensboro housing blackbelt 20khouse mockbee |
