Can Synthetic Fuels Give the Air Force Energy Independence? IEEE Spectrum (http://spectrum.ieee.org)visits an Air Force lab that is testing all sorts of jet fuel alternatives, made from coal, algae, and other sources. But true energy independence remains elusive, as many of these fuels have carbon footprints worse than conventional, kerosene-based jet fuel. A Look Back at 20 Years of Hot Chip Conferences This year's Hot Chip conference was the 20th time industry all-stars gathered to discuss high-performance microprocessors, and IEEE Spectrum was there to look back at two decades of predictions about the future. General-purpose graphics processing units were the big topic this year, but what seems inevitable today may seem silly in a couple of years. For more, see "Confessions of a Hot Chips n00b" (http://blogs.spectrum.ieee.org/tech_talk/2008/09/confessions_of_a_hot_chips_n00.html) Tags: ieee spectrum hot chips 20 electronics high performance microprocessors predictions microchip multicore |

The World's Oldest Phonebook IEEE Spectrum ( spectrum.ieee.org ) visited Christie's auction house to get a look at the 1878 New Haven, Connecticut phone directory, the earliest of its kind. Hardly the antiquated paper brick we know today, the New Haven directory only had 40 pages. It contained names of individuals and businesses, but no numbers. (It also gave instructions on how to begin and end phone conversations). It turns out that some phonebooks still have some (considerable) value to them. Hacking the Human Vision System Neuroscientist Paul Sajda, of Columbia University, taps into the vision system to help computers find meaningful images. Through an EEG cap, the computer can tell which image grab your attention even if they're moving too fast to consciously notice.
