De spits werd voor een half seizoen verhuurd aan De Graafschap. Het jaar daarna werd Huntelaar verhuurd aan AGOVV Apeldoorn. Daar maakte hij naam en faam door met 26 doelpunten topscorer van de eerste divisie te worden. PSV bood hem de optie om een nieuw contract te tekenen, om hem voor het volgende seizoen opnieuw te kunnen uitlenen. Huntelaar zag niets in deze constructie en tekende een contract bij sc Heerenveen. Trainer Guus Hiddink vond Huntelaar overigens te licht voor de echte top. Vanaf 1 juli 2004 speelde Huntelaar bij Heerenveen, waar hij in 46 competitiewedstrijden 33 keer scoorde. Sinds januari 2006 speelt hij zijn wedstrijden voor Ajax. In het seizoen 2005/2006 scoorde hij in een geheel seizoen met Europacups en jeugd-interlands meegerekend, in totaal 54 keer waardoor hij 2e staat op de ranglijst van Nederlandse topschutters in de afgelopen 50 jaar. Nationaal elftal Huntelaar heeft voor Jong Oranje gespeeld waar hij de topscorer allertijden is met 18 doelpunten en het Europees kampioenschap voetbal onder 21 van 2006 won. Hij heeft op dit moment negen interlands voor het Nederlands elftal gespeeld, waarin hij 3 keer scoorde. Op 21 april 2006 werd hij door bondscoach Marco van Basten op de voorlopige lijst van 33 spelers voor het Wereldkampioenschap voetbal 2006 in Duitsland geplaatst. Op 14 mei 2006 bleek hij een van de afvallers te zijn. Spitsen Dirk Kuijt, Ruud van Nistelrooy en Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink mochten wel mee. Op 16 augustus maakte hij echter zijn debuut in een vriendschappelijke wedstrijd tegen Ierland (die Nederland won met 4-0). Hierbij gaf Huntelaar 2 assists en scoorde hij zelf ook twee keer. De laatste keer dat een debutant van Oranje twee keer scoorde was Dick Nanninga in 1978. Op 17 oktober 2007 maakte Huntelaar in het EK-Kwalificatieduel met Slovenië (2-0) het tweede doelpunt op aangeven van voormalig teamgenoot Ryan Babel. De Achterhoeker tekende in december 2005 voor Ajax. Even leek de transfer alsnog af te ketsen, maar na onderhandeling werd er uiteindelijk overeenstemming bereikt over de transfersom, die uiteindelijk 9,5 miljoen euro zou bedragen. Hij begon met de eerste training op 8 januari 2006, waardoor Huntelaar het record van 19 competitie-doelpunten per seizoen van sc Heerenveen net mis liep. Bij Ajax veroverde Huntelaar meteen een basisplaats als spits en scoorde hij enkele beslissende doelpunten. In het totaal maakte Huntelaar in dat seizoen 33 treffers. Hiermee was hij de onbetwiste topscorer van het seizoen, was hij de 17e speler die 30 of meer goals in een seizoen maakt en bereikte hij daarmee de top tien van spelers met de meeste doelpunten in één seizoen. Ook maakte hij zijn bijnaam "the Hunter" helemaal waar in de Gatorade Cup. In de halve finale tegen Roda JC én in de finale tegen PSV Eindhoven scoorde Huntelaar twee maal, waaronder de beslissende goal, in de extra tijd. In het seizoen 2006-2007 seizoen was Huntelaar, wanneer Jaap Stam en Kenneth Perez afwezig waren, de aanvoerder van Ajax. In het seizoen kwam de aanvaller tot 21 doelpunten in 32 competitiewedstrijden. In de bekerfinale in de Kuip scoorde hij de belangrijke gelijkmaker (1-1) tegen AZ. Ook in de strafschoppenserie benutte hij een penalty. Het seizoen dat daarop volgde (2007-2008) begon goed voor "the Hunter". Er werd in de weken voor het begin van de competitie nog aan zijn vorm getwijfeld, maar hij maakte een eind aan die verhalen door de eerste wedstrijd (uit tegen De Graafschap) 4 goals te maken. Hij heeft dit seizoen ook 2 keer in Europees verband gescoord. Ook heeft Huntelaar met het Nederlands Elftal zijn eerste EK Kwalificatie doelpunt te pakken, in de met 2-0 gewonnen wedstrijd tegen Slovenie scoort Huntelaar zijn 3e interland treffer. Verkozen tot Talent van het Jaar van het seizoen 2005-2006 door een jury van 12 personen, waaronder Johan Cruijff, Ruud Gullit en Marco van Basten van het CVCS. Huntelaar was degene die het allereerste doelpunt scoorde in het Emirates Stadium, het nieuwe stadion van Arsenal.
