Don Wade: If Obama murdered his grandmother Obama's gravely ill grandmother was the subject of a twisted joke by Chicago radio host Don Wade. Wade claimed reporters would let Obama get away with anything, even if they were shown videotape of the senator suffocating his own grandmother. Shortly after that segment aired, some listeners began complaining. Typical of comments to CBS-2 News was this e-mail: "Don Wade of WLS talk radio crossed the line this morning describing an insensitive and coded hate scenario where Obama goes to Hawaii and murders his grandmother. It was appalling, disturbing, ugly and over the top." 890-AM's general manager said he had not heard the segment. Wade himself seemed to backpedal a few moments later on his show Friday. McCain's campaign worker lied about racist attack Ashley Todd, a McCain campaign worker who claimed she was the victim of a politically-motivated attack in which she was beaten, kicked and cut, now admits that she made the whole story up. Todd told police that while she did not remember how the backward "B" got on her face, she may have done it herself since she was the only one in the car. According to Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard, Ashley Todd, 20, told investigators today that she "was not robbed and there was no 6'4" black male attacker." Todd initially told police that she was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield Wednesday night and that the suspect began beating her after seeing a John McCain bumper sticker on her car. Todd claimed that the mugger even cut a backwards letter "B" in her check. But today investigators say Todd confessed that the attack never happened. At a news conference this afternoon, officials said they believe that Todd's injuries were self-inflicted. Police investigating the report said Todd's story began to unravel early on and they administered a polygraph test. Investigators asked Todd to return to the police station today for more questioning and to help them release a composite sketch of the suspect. When she did, police say she admitted that she made the whole thing up and that it snowballed out of control. Todd told investigators today that she "just wanted to tell the truth" adding that she was neither robbed, nor attacked. "She indicated that she has prior mental problems and that she does not remember how the backward letter B got on her face," Richard told reporters today. Todd told police that while she did not remember how the backward "B" got on her face, she may have done it herself since she was the only one in the car. Colombia's indigenous protest against Uribe Thousands gather for 62-mile march to demand justice and land 10,000 indigenous Colombians are marching against President Alvaro Uribe's policies. The protest comes one week after violence erupted during demonstrations to press for land reform and dialogue with the government. Ten thousand of Colombia's indigenous peoples are taking part in a massive demonstration, which comes after days of violent clashes between indigenous groups and Colombian police. The 62-mile march began Tuesday in Piendamó, in the Cauca province, and will end Friday in the city of Cali. The aim is to pressure the government into returning land to indigenous farmers and to protest against the alleged genocide of indigenous peoples. Recent clashes stem from the killing of indigenous leaders. Indigenous groups claim 1,200 people have been killed by different armed groups since 2002. Colombia President Álvaro Uribe has denied that police and army forces have been using lethal force against demonstrators, but medics said they have treated scores of Indians injured by bullets and shrapnel. Uribe says out of Colombia's 150 million hectares of land, 30 million already belong to indigenous communities. According to Colombia's national indigenous organization, 27 percent of Colombia's indigenous population have no land. Demonstrators want the government to set aside more land for Colombia's 1.3 million Indians and to provide money for better education and health care. Israeli Settlers Deny Palestinians Access to Their Own Land Sept 08 B'Tselem ISRAELI peace group Israelis deny Palestinians access to land around settlements For years, Israeli authorities have barred Palestinian access to land surrounding settlements, & have not acted to stop settlers piratical closing of lands adjacent to settlements & blocking of Palestinian access. Blocking access expand settlements. Israel institutionalized closing such lands to sanction unauthorized barriers far from houses at edge of settlements. Settlers pave patrol roads & place physical obstructions on Palestinian lands adjacent to settlements, at times with authorities approval. Settlers also forcibly remove Palestinian farmers from their lands. B'Tselem has documented gunfire, threats of gunfire, killing, beatings, stone-throwing, attack dogs, attempts to run over Palestinians, destruction of farming equipment & crops, theft of crops, killing & theft of livestock, unauthorized demands to see ID cards, & theft of documents. Authorities entrusted with enforcing the law not only fail to take action to end violence & prosecute lawbreakers, they block Palestinian access themselves. Soldiers regularly expel Palestinians from their farmland, often under direction of settlers. Israel has established barriers barbed-wire fences, patrol roads, lights & electronic sensory devices far from homes at edge of settlements, annexing large swaths of land to settlements. Especially blatant is the Special Security Area (SSA) plan, in which framework Israel surrounded 12 settlements east of Separation Barrier with rings of land closed to Palestinian entry. As a result, overall area of settlements is 2.4 times larger, increased from 3,325 dunams to 7,793 dunams. More than half of this ring land is under private Palestinian ownership. The amount of land attached to settlements other than through the SSA plan is much larger, given there are no official limitations & less supervision of closing by settlers. B'Tselem estimates that piratical closing has blocked Palestinian entry to tens of thousands of dunams, thus annexing them to settlements. This land grab will be perpetuated & become part of official policy. Palestinian farmers seeking access to their lands must cope with bureaucracy & meet a number of conditions. Must prove ownership of the land. They also have to pressure Civil Administration time & again to set times for them to enter. Also, defense establishment subjects Palestinian access to the caprice of settlers. Many farmers give up and stop trying to gain access and to work their land. Official spokespersons justify the closing of land, closed as a result of SSA plan, on security needs. They contend that, after Separation Barrier was built in the West Bank, settlements east of it were left exposed to violent attacks by Palestinians, & that rings of land could provide a warning area. Indeed, in 2002-2004, Palestinians killed 31 Israeli citizens and injured many others inside settlements in the West Bank. But Israel allows settlers to enter freely, without supervision, the land, which ostensibly was meant to serve as a warning area free of people, but is, in effect, closed only to Palestinians. As a result, settlers move about on the Palestinian land regularly, steal their crops, and even live on and work the land. This practice breaches both logic of a warning zone and military orders closing the area. Land adjacent to the settlement is part of a long list of areas that Israel closes to Palestinians in West Bank: Jordan Valley, East Jerusalem, military-training areas, settlement areas themselves, and others. Every piece of land that Israel closes to Palestinians joins those areas previously taken. they limit the possibilities of millions of persons, principal harm being suffered by farmers. In this context, it should be recalled that the poverty level of Palestinians in the West Bank is extremely high, and that agriculture is the main sector of the Palestinian economy. Blocking access also impedes urban development and limits recreation in the form of nature hikes and enjoyment of land resources. Blocking Palestinian access to land adjacent to settlements is the direct result, and an integral part, of the illegal settlement enterprise. This enterprise continuously violates the absolute prohibition specified in international humanitarian law on settlements in occupied territory. Consequently, Israel is obligated to evacuate the settlers and return them to sovereign Israeli soil. If the settlers are not evacuated, there are ways, which are presented in the report, to protect them in ways that will harm Palestinians to a lesser extent.
