MOTHER 1+2 Maybe someday MOTHER 1+2 will get hacked into English. Here is a video of some early work on it just to see if it was possible. This was only a test, and does not mean the project is active, or that there even is a project. But maybe someday? Even though both EB0 and EB can be played on other emulators, there are actual several benefits of hacking these games this compilation. Making fan hacks to make new games/demos may be easier. EarthBound - How to Skip Starman Junior Trick discovered by Floogal 1. Don't take King with you 2. Lure an enemy to the roadblocks before talking with Picky 3. Make sure your HP is very close to 0 before talking to Picky. 4. Stay low when you go walk up to Picky, otherwise you might accidentally make the enemy disappear offscreen. 5. After the Buzz Buzz speech, go fight the enemy and lose. You have two turns to let the enemy kill Ness - after that, Buzz Buzz will start attacking. This lets you skip the Starman Jr. battle. The game will continue normally, and once the sun comes up, the Starman Jr. battle won't be triggered if you walk in that area. This is mostly a neat little trick for people trying low-level runs. M3 Translation - Main script hacking nearly done Hacking the main script routines was pretty tough, but most of the really important stuff has been reprogrammed now. This isn't a very good video, and the text and translation is still VERY ugly and in first draft. Several revisions/drafts will take place between now and the final patch, so please overlook any weirdness right now. I wanted to try to avoid any spoiler-type text or anything that might ruin surprises, so the text shown is kind of blah and most of it is talking to random animals or signs or whatever. There's a huge amount of interesting/EarthBound-ishtext in this game though, so don't worry. They pulled the EarthBound demo from the Masterpieces section of Smash Bros Brawl. Why? Nobody knows for sure, but one thing seems obvious: it's not good news. If EB doesn't come out on VC, then the series is officially dead in America. So not only are millions of gamers missing out on EarthBound (do you realize that it sells no lower than $70 and as high as $450 on eBay?), but Nintendo of America is taking away our only chance to prove how well MOTHER 3 could perform outside Japan. LAME. But we've dealt with this kind of disappointment for 13 years, so instead of moping and complaining, we're doing what we do best -- kicking up a creative dust cloud. And in the center will be prizes, including a copy of the EarthBound Anthology, Fobby and Starman figurines, and one of the rarest pieces of EB Merchandise in existence: a Mach Pizza air freshener. M3 Translation - Naming Screen Stuff Another small hurdle in the translation project is changing the naming screen stuff in the game. There are a couple different types of naming screens in the game, this one being the main type. To turn the Japanese naming screen into what you see here involves probably about 5-10 different hacks working together. Jeffman did some great work on this stuff, as you can see :) There'll probably still be some improvements/changes made before the final version, but it's looking good so far! As usual, audio gets more out of sync as time goes on. I don't know how to fix it so VBA records stuff in sync. Oh well. Hopefully that new VBA-M or whatever might be better eventually. MOTHER 2 in Japanese Smash Bros. As many EarthBound fans know by now, a demo of EB was removed from Smash Bros. Brawl when it was localized into English and other languages. Boourns. So the next best thing we can do is jealously watch Japanese fans enjoy their MOTHER 2 demos. This video is of someone trying to get as far as possible in the five minute time limit. M3 Translation - Flint vs. Mole (improved) Tons of fixes and improvements have been made to the battle text hacking. The main battle text now acts and looks almost like a fully professionally reprogrammed game. It even includes an auto word wrap feature, which didn't exist in the original game. The Knit Cap Man This is the music video for a song from 1996. This is connected to the MOTHER/EarthBound series in a few ways. 1. The lyrics were written by Itoi, and the video stars him as well. 2. One of the main EarthBound musicians has a band, and it's his band that did the music for this song. 3. M3 Translation - Flint vs. Mischievous Mole Some good strides have been made with hacking various battle-related things, and I thought it'd be nice to let people see it in action rather than still pics. Most notable fixes are that character names don't get erased at the bottom anymore, and that battle text prints better. M3 Translation - Early Battle Preview Not much time has been put into hacking the battle stuff yet, so here's a video of where it stands at the moment. The Japanese battle programming team did things very inefficiently and made many assumptions that aren't valid now, so there are a couple big assembly hacking issues to overcome. Shigesato Itoi's No. 1 Bass Fishing EarthBound series creator Shigesato Itoi also has a fishing game series. This is the Super Famicom game in the series. Fishing games aren't that exciting or anything, so of course this video isn't all that awesome, but sometimes in the game's text you can detect a hint of that Itoi goofiness. The emulator used to take this video doesn't emulate the game correctly, so some of the graphics flash/aren't displayed correctly, but oh well. Also, I suck at fishing games, so I apologize for the extra boringness of this video. MOTHER 2 and EarthBound Mr. Saturn Coffee Scene For MOTHER 2 to EarthBound and Back Again http://tomato.fobby.net/m2eb Here's the Mr. Saturn coffee scene in both MOTHER 2 and EarthBound. No major differences between them, but I thought it'd be nice to at least have them together for anyone to easily view at anytime. The main difference is that at the end of the MOTHER 2 one, the person talking asks that the goddess of good fortune smile upon you, while in EarthBound, that religiousy stuff was removed and replaced with a general good luck message. The other big difference is that the English version takes about a minute longer, since more can generally be said in the Japanese language in less space. Child Abuse in MOTHER 2 and EarthBound For MOTHER 2 to EarthBound and Back Again http://tomato.fobby.net/m2eb In the Japanese version, Picky and Pokey clearly get a harsh beating from their dad. Talking with Pokey afterwards, we find out they got a good spanking. In EarthBound, the sound effect is replaced with the "angry yelling/grumbling" sound effect, and Pokey says his dad told him he doesn't get any dessert for the rest of the decade.
