(Mike Filsaime) ---------------------------------------- Do butterflies dream of clockwork flowers ? keaton doing "mad world" and me doing a painting of grove park - note: I prefer this video to the actual painting as I can express more things in a video!: ------------------------------------ Other Note: what this video could be about -I call this type of thing a concept video - the idea being that it raises questions and ideas - rather than being a master piece of genius in itself - non artist people just look at the surface - but if you have a creative side - or want to develop one I will explain what kind ideas you are ment to be getting from something like this - as I will be making one for each paint or drawing I do - so it would help if my viewers were trained! So using the fluid medium of video I am already expressing motion, emotion, movement in time and space. The music is robotic, non human, a lamenting robot ?(non emotional 'man made' item) is it sad for what the statue represents (world war one dead) or sad for the statue itself ? (one non emotional object to another), maybe the tune is a hark back to the 1980's for the painter, or the viewer and it's nothing to do with a robot at all, and the robot is the imagined voice in the mind of the listener for the steel lady/ angel pointing to the sky ? Practical things - who is Zara ? why is she going in the garden ? why might the angel be a butterfly ? Who 'seems to stand' in the garden ? and why (maybe 'they' are the orange flowers standing tall, like the soldiers holding their bayonets standing to attention as the angel guides them to their next realm/ place of duty (i.e in heaven or where ever honored soldiers go when they die). Maybe the butterflies represent the delicate nature of the human condition and when they take flight, they are heading for the skies as they fly, moving on in time to the next event. Time passes in a butterflies life just as it does a humans, the artist is painting the statue and butterflies are 'calling' through the canvas - a butterfly shakes it's wings like a friendly sprite or fairy saying come with us, see where we are going - come with time to the place there is no time - kind of saying what children are told by adults when someone or a pet/animal dies - they went on a journey, on a boat on a plane, flew of to another part of the world - as that's what live and death is all about - it passes, can't stop time, can't stop death, is the butterfly then the friendly messenger reminding the viewer not to worry about "the end" it is sad but part of time and nature ? or is a butterfly just flapping it's wings in a painting like a painter uses a brush to paint colour on a canvas ? each stoke a beat of it's wings ? Butterflies are like flowers, flowers are delicate, flowers have petals butterflies have wings - both are delicate like the human. the steel angel is delicate but stays young / alive as she is man made, flowers, butterflies & people come and go, she is always there but always cold unless someone remebers why she is there, that brings objects alive, projected emotion, sentiment, memory, history. So the viewer could be thinking about life, birth, death or Zara could be thinking about that as she leave the gallery of people, to go into the garden and seeing the angel in the flowers, that inspires her to do a painting... who knows I don't ?!...it a concept video - like I said there to make you make up a story of an idea in your imagination. You need imagination in order to keep things fresh, renew ideas, dreams - it not about the fact "some woman" is messing about with a video camera, making videos a monkey could make - people without creative brains can't see past the look and think it's crap maybe as their brains aren't trained in creative thinking - that is their weakness - they don't like people knowing they have that weakness so they stamp on it. - people with creative brains make a story, get a new idea from a set of circumstances and creative something new - nurture in what causing innovation to grow - if people were all stampers art galleries would be closed down, butterflies would be pests getting in the way and flowers pointless.
