Coalescence and Luxation An abstract music video created by animating particle generators in 3D space to represent each musical element. The music is Coalescence and Luxation by Escape Philosophy. The music was created on a modular synthesizer, one monophonic line at a time. To download the music, please visit http://stretta.blogspot.com/2008/03/coalescence-and-luxation.html If you like this video, you may also enjoy http://youtube.com/watch?v=0-3cAc1tH50 Music and video are Creative Commons Share Alike 3.0 license. Where Are You? (part 2) I'm playing a French Connection controller against a simple looping phrase. If you listen carefully to the phrase, the pulses change vary slightly throughout the composition. The French Connection is controlling a small collection of modules including a Cwejman VCO-RM2, MMF1, Plan B model 11 and Doepfer VCA. The left hand joystick is controlling various parameters including the frequency of the slave osc of the VCO which is also frequency modulating one of the filters. Vimeo has a better quality version of this piece, including stereo audio. Unfortunately, this piece is not really mono compatible - all sorts of phase cancelation occurs when youtube collapses the file to stereo. http://www.vimeo.com/707506 Go to http://stretta.com for more information Tags: French Connection Cwejman analog modular |

monome 64 tilt The monome 64 includes X/Y tilt sensors. I'm using a small application to trigger notes, sent to my modular via a MIDI to CV interface. The tilt is directly controlling a VCA and filter cutoff, so I'm articulating the notes with the physical movement of the device. Later in the video, I'm also routing the tilt sensor to control the rate of an LFO which is triggering an envelope of another VCA which is gating the output. The source can be downloaded at: http://stretta.blogspot.com/2008/02/monome-64-tilt.html Tags: monome 64 tilt analog doepfer modular |

A Brief Conversation Resulting in One Less Child This is an early prototype of Josh Boughey's stribe project. I'm attempting to write some software to turn the hardware into a musical instrument. After a few nights of communicating with the firmware to light up LEDs in a meaningful manner, I switched gears and created a quick application that would hopefully result in a musical statement, albeit without the LED feedback I'm looking for. I'm still working on this. If you're interested in what the stribe is, more information can be found here: http://www.soundwidgets.com/stribe/ The software I'm using was created in Max, you can download the software at: http://www.stretta.com Tags: stribe monome synth alternate controller |

residue DD103 This is me messing around with some software I wrote for the monome 256 called 'residue'. It grew out of a drum pattern sequencer I created earlier. Instead of a straight drum sequencer, it provides two independent melody patterns in addition to the drum patterns. Not only can you write patterns while the software is running, you can write and edit a non-playing pattern. While one pattern is playing, I'm writing another, then switching to that pattern when I want. All three voices loop independently so I can alter the phase of the loops on the fly. The software is triggering individual drum sounds on a soft sampler. Everything else is from the modular. I started the video with a completely blank slate - no pre-compsed patterns or tracks. Everything you see is constructed and recorded live via the monome interface. The music, video and software is all creative commons, which means you can freely use or modify any of it, provided you give credit to stretta.com. The track and software can be downloaded at stretta.com Tags: monome analog doepfer modular stretta 256 electronic |

Cygnet Cygnet is an extension of the original fourths application. First, it grew the ability to play different grid configurations, then I added a 4-tap delay, then I added an 8-track sequencer. I created this to realize a piece of music which I'm still working on. The max patch is far enough along to create a demonstration video, and share with the patch with the monome community. Hopefully at some point in the future, I'll be able to share a real music statement and not simply a bunch of noodling. Dissociative Fugue If it were not for youtube, I wouldn't have bothered creating this. At least here, there is the possibility someone may stumble across it. Here is some synesthesia for you. This was an attempt to visualize some of the abstract noise that goes on inside my head when listening to music. At first blush, it may not seem that different from a software visualizer. Unfortunately, visualizers are bound by the analysis of a stereo mix. While a it may extract information from certain frequency ranges, it can't really tell a clarinet from a duduk and represent each discretely. Here, each element has its own visual counterpart. I read that some people lack the ability to distinguish the individual parts of a piece of music clearly. This blew my mind. Perhaps it will help others hear music in a different way, or grasp some of the more subtle interplay of the individual parts. The music is Dissociative Fugue by Archetribe. A better sounding version of the audio file can be found at: http://www.last.fm/music/Archetribe/_/Dissociative+Fugue A downloadable, better-looking version of the video can be found at http://www.stretta.com Tags: Dissociative Fugue synesthesia Archetribe Waterworks abstract 3D computer animation Adobe After Effects electronic |
