Eurovision 1962 - United Kingdom Ronnie Carroll performing "Ring-A-Ding Girl", the UK entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest. The second entry that year with a nonsensical title (along with Finland's "Tipi-Tii") is another cheery, uptempo song that manages to stick to the listener's mind (perhaps to an irritating degree!). Not among the UK's best, IMO, but it's still a cute number with a relaxed, easy-going performance by Ronnie Carroll, who would also represent the UK the following year (the only British artist to enter two years in a row), reaching 4th place on both occasions. I was also surprised to learn that he is currently the leader of a small political party, one "that advocates the abolition of Parliament in favour of devolution to city states and decision-making by referendum", according to Wikipedia! Eurovision 1962 - Yugoslavia Lola Novaković performing "Ne Pali Svetla u Sumrak" ("Don't Turn the Lights on at Twilight"), the Yugoslav entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest. Yugoslavia's second-ever entry and one of their relatively few Serbian-language ones, this song was possibly the year's best ballad aside from the French one and definitely that contest's jazziest tune (love that sax, btw!), a sweet, atmospheric lullaby wonderfully sung by Lola, one of her country's most popular singers during the 60s. The juries also loved it, since its joint 4th place was Yugoslavia's only top-5 placing until 1983! Eurovision 1962 - Switzerland Jean Philippe performing "Le Retour" ("The Return"), the Swiss entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest. Jean Philippe's second appearance at the contest (he'd represented France in 1959, finishing 3rd) was less successful than his first - 10th place with 2 points - although, to be honest, I personally like this memorable dramatic ballad more than "Oui, Oui, Oui, Oui". I'm not a big fan of his performance, though... Btw, the song's writers, Géo Voumard and Émile Gardaz, wrote quite a few of the early Swiss entries, including the contest's very first winner "Refrain" - and would also come very close to winning the following year with the excellent "T'En Vas Pas". Eurovision 1962 - Norway Inger Jacobsen performing "Kom Sol, Kom Regn" ("Come Sun, Come Rain" - hope this is right, Lars :-)), the Norwegian entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest. It may have had the bad luck of following eventual winner Isabelle Aubret, but this is still a truly nice, old-fashioned jazzy ballad that has been growing on me for some time now - perhaps helped by Inger's low voice, which I personally find very appealing. Eurovision 1962 - France Isabelle Aubret performing "Un Premier Amour" ("A First Love"), the French entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest. France's 3rd win in 5 years may sound too much. but this entry simply deserved it hands down! Although I personally prefer the studio version, whose sparer, subtler arrangement gets more under your skin, this is still a magical, entrancing melody beautifully sung by Isabelle, who really magnetizes the camera. Six years later, in 1968, she'd return to the contest with another ESC classic, "La Source", which came quite close to giving her a 2nd victory (in eventually ranked 3rd). Eurovision 1962 - Netherlands De Spelbrekers performing "Katinka", the Dutch entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest. The fourth song that year to score the dreaded "nul points" (along with Belgium, Spain and Austria) and the one that deserved it less, IMO. Not that it's a winner, but this upbeat, catchy number was one of the year's most memorable numbers and should have done better. At least, its disastrous showing at the voting didn't prevent it from becoming a hit and a classic of early 60s Eurovision. Oh, and the screen going black at the middle of the performance isn't due to the video quality - that is actually how European viewers saw it on the night, since a technical glitch with the broadcast caused this rather unfortunate mishap (foretelling of the song's luck, perhaps?). Eurovision 1962 - Germany Conny (or Cornelia) Froebess performing "Zwei Kleine Italiener" ("Two Little Italians"), the German entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest. One of the most widely-known songs from that year's contest, and not without reason since, along with the Finnish entry, this was quite possibly the cutest and catchiest song of the bunch (all together now: "O Tina, O Marina...") - helped by a lively performance from 19-year-old Conny, a popular teen singer and actress at the time (according to Wikipedia, she mostly starred in comedy films, where she often played a teenage girl "who craves for independence from her all-too-strict parents", which sounds to me like a German version of Sandra Dee or Annette Funicello). Eurovision 1962 - Sweden Inger Berggren performing "Sol och Vår" ("Sun and Spring"), the Swedish entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest. After four old-fashioned ballads in a row (Belgium, Spain, Austria and Denmark), people must have been relieved to hear something more upbeat - and, without being among that year's or Sweden's best, this is a fun, chirpy tune with winking lyrics and a relaxed performance by Inger (though she could have done without those "pa-ra-ra"'s in the bridge). Overall, a song that I personally like. Tags: Eurovision Song Contest ESC 1962 sweden inger berggren sol och var swedish sverige svensk luxembourg upbeat pop |

Eurovision 1962 - Austria Eleonore Schwarz performing "Nur in der Wiener Luft" ("Only in the Air of Vienna"), the Austrian entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest. The third of the year's four nul-pointers (the first three of which were performed back-to-back!), and if anyone thought that the Spanish entry deserved this, wait till you hear this one! A song that sounds like a throwaway tune from a second-rate Broadway musical, performed by a fauz-operatic voice that, to me at least, sounds REALLY annoying (esp. in the song's bridge, where I felt that my ears were starting to bleed!). Not only the year's worst entry, but one that is high on my list of worst entries ever! Eurovision 1962 - Spain Victor Balaguer performing "Llámame" ("Call Me"), the Spanish entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest. Spain's second entry had the misfortune of becoming their first nul-pointer (two more would follow, in 1965 and 1983) and one of four entries that year to hold that dubious honor. Unlike Belgium, though, I can't say this one didn't deserve it, since IMO it's a quite mediocre and old-fashioned (even by 1962 standards) song - and I also find Victor's voice to be quite irritating (though the following entry would be much worse!). Eurovision 1962 - Belgium Fud Leclerc performing "Ton Nom" ("Your Name"), the Belgian entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest. Fud's 4th appearance at the contest (weren't there any other singers in French-speaking Belgium back then?) would also be an undignified last one, since this song has the dubious honor of being among that year's bunch of entries which scored the contest's first-ever "nul points" - no less than four of them, actually (although this has a lot to do with a new voting system that was implemented that year). Anyway, this is not such a bad song as this outcome suggests - in fact, I find the orchestration to be quite interesting - but it's not that special either, IMO... Eurovision 1962 - Finland Marion Rung performing "Tipi-Tii" ("Chirpy-Chirp"), the Finnish entry at the 1962 Eurovision Song Contest. A silly but immensely catchy little song, this is arguably the most well-known among the first Finnish entries and a true classic of early 60s ESC. Marion would return to the contest in 1973 (again in Luxembourg, again performing first in the running order!) with "Tom Tom Tom", and this time she'd do a bit better than the 7th place she achieved with this one, reaching 6th place - which was Finland's best-ever showing at the contest before Lordi! Eurovision 1983 - Netherlands Bernadette performing "Sing Me a Song", the Dutch entry at the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest. Undoubtedly one of the highlights of a very strong year, a truly marvelous, original number with simple but effective lyrics and a spot-on performance from Bernadette (who bears an uncanny resemblance to a young Michelle Pfeiffer!). Kudos must also go to the backing vocalists, who are largely responsible for the SOARING climax of the song, and among which one can spot three-times entrant Sandra Reemer. And since we're on the subject of Eurovision connections, the song's composer, Piet Souer, was the guitarist who accompanied Lenny Kuhr in the 1969 Dutch entry (and one of the four joint-winners that year) "De Troubadour" - which, incidentally, is one of my all-time favorites at the contest. I guess this kind of explains why I like this one so much... :-) Tags: Eurovision Song Contest ESC 1983 netherlands bernadette sing me song munich germany dutch nederland holland sandra pop |

Eurovision 1983 - Norway Jahn Teigen (with significant help from wife Anita Skorgan) performing "Do-Re-Mi", the Norwegian entry at the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest. Five years after his notorious appearance at the 1978 contest with "Mil Etter Mil" provided a truly classic ESC moment (and the first ever nul-pointer under the "12 points" voting system!) and a year after he and Anita had made up for it with a decent showing for their 1982 entry "Adieu", Jahn once more returned to the scene of the crime with this cute musical-like number and this time did even better, achieving Norway's first top-10 result in a decade! I'm not sure whether it deserved to be so high in such a strong year (the best of the 80s, IMO), but I'll admit to having a soft spot for this seemingly silly little tune - in fact, I find both the song and the performance to be irresistibly lovable (esp. the kiss with Anita!). Eurovision 1972 - Netherlands Sandra and Andres performing "Als't Om de Liefde Gaat" ("When It's All About Love"), the Dutch entry at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest. Eurovision 1972 - Luxembourg Vicky Leandros performing "Après Toi" ("After You"), Luxembourg's entry at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest. Well, what can I say about such a classic? Long before the contest, everyone considered this a sure favorite, and Vicky's flawless, bigger-than-life performance sealed the deal - thus continuing the early 70s tradition of victories for epic French-language ballads sung by strong female voices, one that had started the year before with Séverine and would carry over to the next year with Anne-Marie David (incidentally, "Après Toi"'s lyricist Yves Dessca had also written "Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue", thus becoming the only person in ESC history with back-to-back wins!). And it was a sort of sweet revenge for Vicky, after having to settle for 4th place in 1967 with "L'Amour Est Bleu" despite, again, being a favorite (legend has it that she didn't want to return to the contest after that, and that it took a lot of begging and a song as strong as this one to change her mind!). Second time was the charm, though, making her the first Greek artist to win the contest, a full 32 years before Helena Paparizou (and the 10 million records she sold with this one didn't hurt, either!). At their second consecutive appearance at the contest (after ranking 6th in 1971 with "Vita Vidder"), the Swedish foursome returned with another carefree, pleasant number, although this one didn't quite match the charm and the originality of their previous entry, resulting at a quite lower 13th place at the voting (though I know a certain Irishman who loves this one) ;-) Tags: Eurovision Song Contest ESC 1971 sweden family four harliga sommardag sverige svenska swedish scandinavian edinburgh uk |

Eurovision 1972 - Italy Nicola di Bari performing "I Giorni dell' Arcoballeno" ("The Days of the Rainbow"), the Italian entry at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest. I know that, um, certain people are quite tired of me waxing lyrical about Italian entries, but this is really one for which I just can't resist doing so, and quite simply one of my biggest favorites from Italy - a truly magical, breathtaking song, with beautiful poetic lyrics, that just transports me every time I listen to it. All this, plus a wonderful performance by Nicola di Bari, who had won the Sanremo festival a few months before, making these one of only 2 times after 1966 that the Italians sent their actual Sanremo winning song to Eurovision - the other one being their swansong at the contest, 1997's "Fiumi di Parole". Eurovision 1972 - Finland Päivi Paunu & Kim Floor performing "Muistathan" ("Do You Remember"), the Finnish entry at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest. Another male/female duet in a year full of those (since there were also Norway, Malta, Monaco, Belgium and the Netherlands), the Finns' choice was a number sounding quite like a Russian folk song, an interesting tune with a good performance (though Kim's must be one of the lowest voices ever in the contest!), but not much more really, IMO. It's interesting to note that Paivi later scored a big hit with a cover of "Those Were the Days" that is now considered an evergreen in Finland, while Kim (who was primarily an actor rather than a singer) would get to host the Finnish version of "Wheel of Fortune" in the 90s. The two of them wouldn't sing together again until 2007, when they reunited to perform this song in the Finnish NF. Eurovision 1972 - Malta Helen & Joseph (full names Helen Micallef and Joseph Cutajar) performing "L-imħabba", the Maltese entry at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest. Kind of a goofy song, and one that I sorta like for this reason - it's so silly that it's quite cute, really. Still, I understand why this got squashed by the competition, giving Malta's 2nd entry their 2nd successive last place. Also interesting to think that this was the last time we heard the Maltese language at ESC, as all their entries since have been exclusively English-speaking (aside from a few lines in Maltese in their 2000 entry, as setheurovision94 has informed me). Eurovision 1972 - Portugal Carlos Mendes performing "A Festa da Vida" ("The Party of Life"), the Portuguese entry at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest. One of my biggest favorites from that year, a splendid dramatic song with great lyrics (which could be taken for having a slightly political undertone) and, most of all, a simply amazing, passionate performance by Carlos, in his second appearance at the contest after 1968. Btw, while searching for him, I was quite surprised to find out that one of his first solo recordings (after first achieving fame with the group Sheiks, along with 1974 entrant Paulo de Carvalho) was a cover version of "Penina", a song written for the Portuguese group Jota Herre by no less a figure than Paul McCartney! A cute, but not all that great, song that was understandably lost amid the strong competition, despite Grethe and Benny really giving it the best they could. Grethe, who passed away only last November, was a former child star who continued to sing and act for many years - one of her most impressive credits being her starring role in the 1993 theatre play "A Star Is Torn", where she portrayed not one, not two, but nine different showbiz legends with a tragic fate (among them, Edith Piaf, Marilyn Monroe and Janis Joplin). Eurovision 1972 - United Kingdom The New Seekers performing "Beg, Steal or Borrow", the UK entry at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest. One of the most popular pop bands at the time - having, in fact, just scored a huge worldwide hit with "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (in Perfect Harmony)" - the New Seekers represented the host country with this bright and cheery pop number, possibly the year's most contemporary song (along with the Austrian entry). A truly, truly likeable song and performance, it's no wonder it was huge with the juries, even if, in the end, it couldn't deprive Vicky Leandros of victory, eventually giving the UK yet another 2nd place at the contest. Eurovision 1972 - France Betty Mars performing "Comé-Comédie", the French entry at the Eurovision Song Contest. It's quite obvious that the French went for an Edith Piaf fascimile here, and they got it in such a large degree that it's almost unnerving - from Betty's voice, who sounds as close to Piaf as anyone could get, to the song itself, that could have quite easily been a part of the legendary singer's catalogue. Eventually, the trick didn't work for them in the voting (maybe the juries thought it was too much of a gimmick), but this is still a good song and performance, even if it doesn't belong to France's best, IMO. Monaco's debut at the contest wasn't a very lucky one, since they finished last with just 1 point. It's not as bad as this suggests actually - in fact, this update of a French folk song is an interesting uptempo number with a nice piano riff - although it's not anything truly special either.
