Re3600_norm.avi Vortex shedding in the wake of a stationary cylinder in a vertically flowing soap film at Reynolds number Re ~ 3600. The characteristic staggered arrangement of vortices is known as the so-called von Kármán vortex street. Visualization is done using an interference technique. Filmed at the Technical University of Denmark, Physics Department. Tags: von Karman vortex street shedding physics fluid dynamics DTU techincal university of denmark |

Viscous splash A drop of glycerin falls 2.5 meters and impacts a shallow layer of ethanol on a glass plate. Initially a "bowl" of glycerin rises which then breaks up in a beautiful grid pattern due to the marangoni instability of the bowl surface. Filmed at 2900 fps. Filmed at the Physics Department at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Credits Anders Andersen and Teis Schnipper. For details see the excellent publication "Crown breakup by Marangoni instability" (2006), Thoroddsen et. al, J. Fluid Mech. vol. 557, p.63-72.
