Shen Jingdong at China Square Gallery - Aug 7, 2008 This show of Shen Jingdong's work, titled "Hero" was curated by Eric C. Shiner. I found the work reminiscent of Hergé (the creator of Tintin). The artist's sensibilities become clear when you understand his background. Trained as an artist at Nanjing Art College, he was later drafted into the military where he was assigned to serve in the Military Drama Troupe. Fly's Eye by Buckminster Fuller at Max Protetch - June 2008 Fuller's Fly's Eye is a typical example of tensegrity in action. Fuller wrote of the Fly's Eye Dome design in 1983, "The basic hardware components will produce a beautiful, fully equipped, air-deliverable house that weighs and costs about as much as a good automobile." He emphasized the structure's potential to harness passive solar energy and natural wind ventilation. In this video, we first see a small model of it in the gallery, then a full-size instatllation in New York's Laguardia Place. I love the way that Laguardia's statue seems to be hailing it! Also, in the video we see Fuller's Rowing Needle, and concept drawings of the Dymaxion Car. Bubble Battle in Times Square - June 21, 2008 I went to the Bubble Battle and died a soapy death. This wonderful, silly, fantastic event was organized by newmindspace.com Just a sample of how great life can be in New York City. Hundreds and hundreds of adult children gathered in Times Square and released a hurricane of soap bubbles - what a mess! The best part was the bewildered tourists and passersby trying to figure out what we were protesting or demonstrating about. Why is it whenever a bunch of people gather does it have to be a protest? Can't we just get together and have fun? Tags: Bubble Battle Times Square New York City NYC soap bubbles newmindspace fun flash mob yoyopro |

Margaret Leng Tan performs SweetChinoiserie by Guy Klucevsek Performed at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts on May 31, 2008 Renowned accordianist/composer Guy Klucevsek adapted the toy instrumental suite, Sweet Chinoiserie for Margaret Leng Tan from his Chinoiserie, a music-theater collaboration with Ping Chong & Company. Soundwise and visually, it is one of the most colorful works in her toy repertory, drawing on an arsenal of kitchen and toy percussion and other toy instruments such as the melodica and of course, the toy accordion. The title of the suite's third movement, The Mark of a Hero, is a nod to the brand name of her toy accordion. Liu Zhang at 798 Avant Gallery - May 15, 2008 Renowned photographer, Liu Zhang, born in Hebei Province, currently living and working in Beijing. Note the fantastic use of black and white composition as he captures the landscape of modern China. I think in many ways it parallels the landscape of the USA in the 1930's, the effects of rapid development, such as the Tennessee Valley Authority, coal mining, rural entertainment - in many ways and in many aspects, Liu Zhang has captured a moment in a nation's history. Lee Bul at Lehmann Maupin - May 8, 2008 Widely recognized as one of the leading Korean artists of her generation, Lee will present an installation of sculptural works, along with related studies and drawings, comprising a wide range of materials, visual elements, and references. Anchoring the exhibition is a large, grotto-like sculpture entitled Bunker -- M. Bakhtin. The work invites visitors inside to experience what the artist describes as a "sonic simulacrum" of architectural spaces and landscapes; interwoven is a layered narrative of modernity and historical memory emerging from the complex relationship between Korea and Japan in the 20th century. Situated within a mirrored environment that is at once brilliant and disorienting, Bunker -- M. Bakhtin is paired with an obsessively intricate structure made of glass, crystals, and aluminum suspended in midair—an homage to the visionary Weimar architect Bruno Taut, whose "peculiar fusion of futurist fantasia, utopian manifesto, and private obsessions," in the artist's words, seems to preside over the exhibition as a whole. Other works in the exhibition include wall pieces and a gridded platform on the floor making use of two-way mirrors to create the illusion of fragmentary architectural structures repeating and receding into infinite space. Matt Jones at BUIA Gallery - March 28, 2008 In this show titled "Everlasting", we see new paintings by Matt Jones. Using himself and key figures in his life as subject matter, Jones constructs an implied narrative out of dynamic, boldly colored contemporary portraiture. In canvases large in scale, Jones places his subjects into primary roles and examines these archetypes revealing their common fragilities and strengths. Though working in a powerful, clear, painterly style, Jones does not offer resolution, but a mythologically-based inquiry into his own psyche that is applicable to the world at large. The work is both painterly and popish, as if Andy Warhol gave birth to Claude Monet - this is some very exciting stuff. Devorah Sperber at Caren Golden Fine Art - March 20, 2008 This show, titled "Mirror Universe" features an entirely new body of work by Sperber based on images from the television series Star Trek. The title, Mirror Universe, alludes to the 1967 Star Trek episode Mirror, Mirror in which a transporter mishap swaps the crew of the Enterprise with evil counterparts, trapping them in a "savage parallel universe." The concept of a mirror or parallel universe is a dominant theme in the show, and, in keeping with this metaphor, many of the works incorporate mirrors to view the work, other work incorporate chenille stems. For Sperber the exhibition is an opportunity to look at the relationship between popular science and art, and how they relate to larger metaphysical issues. In particular, she is interested in how consciousness and the act of seeing create the illusion of a stable, predictable, singular world. Ai Wei Wei at Mary Boone Gallery - March 8, 2008 The first major exhibition in New York by this influential Chinese contemporary artist, who, through his diverse body of work, distills that nation's restless cultural, social, and political order. As the centerpiece of the show, 艾未未 Ai Weiwei has created "Descending Light", an adaptation of his iconic chandelier form that here appears to have buckled by the violent impact of its fall. Lying askew on the ground, the fixture's colossal structural rings remain festooned with strands of red crystals illuminated from within. With its brilliant red, emblematic of China, the work at once conveys the toppling of established order and the burning promise of the future. MP3 Experiment Four: The Photo Session - August 18, 2007 From the ImprovEverywhere MP3 Experiment Four . This is the "photo session" portion of the event. In the audio, you hear what the participants are hearing through the headphones. I followed Steve's instructions to the best of my abilities, and in the video, you see the result! The MP3 Experiments are events organized by imporveverywhere's Charlie Todd. Participants are informed via email to download an MP3 file to their music playing device, but are not to listen to it until showing up at a designated place and time. At the time the audio starts, particpants then follow the instructions. I couldn't tell for sure, but I'm guessing there were about 1,000 people involved in this one. It was massive, the bystanders were perplexed and amazed. It was a beautiful day, and a great event as always. Group Show at Moti Hasson Gallery - August 2, 2007 Okay, check out Ingrid's shoes! Greener Pastures, Permanent Midnight is a group exhibition curated by Ingrid Chu that includes painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installations by Dike Blair, Franklin Evans, Joy Garnett, Emilie Halpern, and Katie Holten, each of whom incorporate the effects of art history, the media, and world events, as well as drawing from their personal surroundings to visualize the contemporary landscape in ways that are fantastical, eco-conscious, subjective, and psychological in nature. Some derive source material appropriated from mainstream media and film, while others employ pseudo-scientific analysis as a methodology, or look toward natural phenomenon as a primary source, with many pieces formally manifesting as awkward or unwieldy objects. Where their works intersect is in how the "here and now" is conceived using a creative process that gives evidence of its material production. Perhaps as an attempt to make the sublime tangible, the artists in Greener Pastures, Permanent Midnight bestow a sense of immediacy to their work not available to them through the perceived reality that their sources allude to. Theirs is a world that depicts a hazy outcome at best, even if their commentary is at times pointed and political. All of this portends to a crisis in observing the contemporary world that is inquisitive, hopeful, and at times, catastrophic in nature, and all of which belies a sense of urgency, not only in terms of the means through which these artists articulate the moment, but also in questioning their ability to do so. Mario Testino "At Home" at Yvon Lambert - July 10, 2007 Mario Testino is a world-reknown fashion photographer, and also a very talented curator, as I saw in this show. Here he has assembled works by John Stezaker, Glenn Ligon, Anne Collier, Wolfgang Tillmans, Nicola Tyson, and Anselm Reyle, not in a typical gallery space setting, but rather in a handsomely designed drawing room. The effect gives focus towards not only what you see, but consideration of how you see it. The opening itself was a great example of an elegant gathering in Chelsea. While wandering about, I overheard Testino making a comment about what some people (artists in particular) deride as "decorative art". I agree with him completely, in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with "decorative" art per se, it can be every bit as beautiful and meaningful as any fine art. Each artist in the exhibition presents their own spin on the ready-made: some continue the Duchampian tradition of "re-titling" or re-purposing of a common object to make an objet d'art, others use an amalgamation of everyday objects in the creation of an entirely new work, while others fabricate seemingly or deceptively common objects from other raw materials. In each instance, the artist expands the viewers' perception of the object and the art. Tags: Ready-Made Yvon Lambert Fine Art Gallery New York NYC Chelsea yoyopro |

Chen Jiagang 陈家刚 at China Square Gallery - July 12, 2007 I had a great time at this opening, and ran into some friends while I was there. I also noticed that a lot of people there were wearing fancy shoes! Chen Jiangang's narrative images reflect the drastic binarism of China's booming cities and stagnant countryside. Chen's large scale use of space engages the viewer in the conflict between man and his surroundings, what is forgotten and longed for, the present and the past. Full of social and political commentary, the images in the exhibition portray certainty and uncertainty; the confidence of China's development and the question of its ramifications. Shown by the juxtaposition of things plundered and revered, places forgotten and revisited, Chen's work captures a disappearing history that seems silent and still. Further exploration reveals discontent and indignation. He creates an ambiguous suspense between the background and foreground, the individual and the collective, the subject and the environment. His choice of contrasting and fading color creates a romantic dream-like feeling of nostalgia, memory and a faint history - all fleeting yet perfectly fixed. Ho Sup Hwang, Yuliya Lanina at 2x13 Gallery - July 10, 2007 In "Journey", 2X13's last group show of the season, Ho Sup Hwang and Yuliya Lanina employed conceptual symbols of Eastern and Western philosophy and culture to explore the intersection of individual experience and broader manifestation of life in their works. For this exhibition, Ho Sup Hwang has created a new series, 108-1, which explores the Buddhist doctrine: life is a journey to overcome human's 108 sufferings. Choi Kyungtae at Project Space 35 - July 5, 2007 Kyungtae Choi lives and works in Korea. His work has been seen extensively in South Korea since the early 1980s, and has been the subject of nearly a dozen solo exhibitions in Korea. This is Mr. Choi's first solo exhibition outside of Korea. Unlike the work of other artists who blur the boundaries between art and pornography, Mr. Choi's art seems fixated on female genitalia, typically the only unclothed body part of his subjects. The allure is not romantic or even erotic, but base and bestial. Metaphorically, the arousing young women depicted can stand for our morally bankrupt society: at once desirable and disturbing, these women stir up the basest of desires, lust and the desire to possess -- yet they retain power for themselves, by inciting unattainable desire, frustrating all attempts of the observer to possess them. Group Show at David Zwirner Gallery - June 28, 2007 Show titled "a point in space is a place for argument". Featuring work by Hans Accola, Lynda Benglis, Forrest Bess, Julien Bismuth, Andre Cadere, John Chamberlain, Raoul De Keyser, Vincent Fecteau, Isa Genzken, Mary Heilmann, Eva Hesse, Alfred Jensen, Mike Kelley, Rachel Khedoori, Lee Lozano, Michael Mahalchik, Gordon Matta-Clark, Paul McCarthy, Bruce Nauman, Claes Oldenburg, Joe Overstreet, Steven Parrino, Jason Rhoades, Dieter Roth, Niki de Saint Phalle, Fred Sandback, Katy Schimert, Al Taylor, Paul Thek, and Cathy Wilkes. Wittgenstein argued an object's existence is predicated on its situation in space; a point in a visual field must have color and a tactile object must have a degree of solidity to differentiate it from infinite space. Spanning the last five decades, the works on view present multiple modes by which artists have approached the object in space. The abstract philosophy becomes physical as artists engage the tensions of materiality, form, and function. Tags: David Zwirner Gallery Fine Art New York City NYC Chelsea night sherbert yoyopro |
